This week, the Supreme Court ruled that a president has certain immunities from prosecution. With the legal cases facing Trump, including for his plot to steal the 2020 election, it’s clear to see what’s happening here.

The conservative majority in the Court is laying the groundwork to help Trump evade consequences. And as Justice Sonia Sotomayor warned in her dissent, this ruling sets a precedent that threatens democracy:

"Never in the history of our Republic has a President had reason to believe that he would be immune from criminal prosecution if he used the trappings of his office to violate the criminal law. Moving forward, however, all former Presidents will be cloaked in such immunity. If the occupant of that office misuses official power for personal gain, the criminal law that the rest of us must abide by will not provide a backstop.”

Trump is keen on winning New Jersey in 2024, and it’s up to us to stop him. With a Supreme Court compromised by Trump sycophants, we can no longer count on the rule of law to keep him in check.
