Dear John,
This morning I was interviewed by Neil Cavuto about the state of the Democratic Party, once again calling for the President to step down from his position as the presumptive nominee.
There will then be one person left in the race…and that’s me.
The field will open up immediately, of course, with several traditional politicians just waiting in the wings. But it isn’t the party elite who should now “decide” who the new nominee should be. The only just and democratic way to handle this is to begin a new, mini primary leading to an open convention.
A new nominating process would not be chaotic, as some have said they fear. It will be exciting. It will engage people. And more than anything else, it will be the way a democracy is supposed to work.
My having won 500,000 votes in the primaries leading to this, our agenda must be heard going forward. It's going to take more than a status quo politician to defeat Donald Trump. It has to be someone offering as much inspiration and hope as he is offering a hotbed of grievances.
Please join me in a deep commitment to the creation of a campaign that I believe is the ONLY one that can beat Donald Trump in November.
