Donald Trump has joined TikTok — the popular short-form video social media platform that many young voters say is their primary source of political news. Trump joining the platform ensures that misinformation about the 2024 election and other topics will be prevalent on the app in the coming months.

Trump was previously banned from Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter for his violent-inducing posts and misinformation. And we’ve continued to support efforts to keep those bans in place, and keep Trump and other fossil fueled fascists off of social media platforms. TikTok should take a stand against disinformation by making it clear that Trump isn’t welcome on its platform.

President Biden and most members of Congress already voted to force TikTok's Chinese parent company, ByteDance, to sell the social media ap to an American. When Trump was president, he tried to ban TikTok too. But now says, "Frankly, there are a lot of people on TikTok that love it. There are a lot of young kids on TikTok who will go crazy without it."

We've seen this kind of pandering from Trump and other fossil fueled fascists in the past. We all saw Trump use social media to weaponize hate and lies against people and the planet. Every day was a fire hose of lies, hate, misinformation and climate denial.

But it wasn't until the day after the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol that Facebook finally suspended fossil fueled fascist Donald Trump for using it "to incite violent insurrection against a democratically elected government." Now, Trump wants to get onto TikTok so he can weaponize his lies and misinformation with a new generation.

According to a Pew Research study in a late 2023 roughly one-third of Americans aged 18–29 regularly get their news from TikTok. Nearly half of all TikTok users say they regularly get news from the app, a higher percentage than for any other social media platform aside from Twitter.

Donald Trump can not be trusted on a social media platform that many young people have access to. His violent threats and misinformation about climate change and more are dangerous and should not be circulating around online.
