BILL MCKIBBEN RESPONSE TO BIDEN DEBATE

Excerpts from the McKibben Substack piece 6-28-24:

"Politics is about changing people’s minds, channeling their intuitions, organizing their moods. Communication is the main tool for that. And Biden is no longer a consistently effective communicator. He’s got good people around him, he can and has made wise decisions, I am not worried about the operation of the Republic under his care. But clearly he can no longer count on his ability to rally Americans. He can no longer reliably summon people to action, appeal to their better angels, let them share a vision of a workable future"

"But there’s the chance for this to be not just a defensive decision, but a proud and game-changing one—perhaps our best chance for getting out of the wearying rut of our contemporary politics."

"Trumpism is selfishness—that is its parts and that is its sum. With a powerful act of selflessness Biden can break the evil spell that selfishness has cast. It would be a remarkable thing for an old man to do, and a hell of a way to cap a career that began in the 1960s. Ask what you can do for your country!"

MORE FROM BILL MCKIBBEN

In an ideal world, we wouldn’t need a Political Action Committee (PAC).

Money would play a small role in elections, which would be simply a contest of ideas. But we don’t live in an ideal world—and to move in that direction we have to be able to stand up, at least a little, to the wave of money and influence that have come to dominate our electoral system.

Hence GrayPAC—older Americans standing together to elect the people and enact the policies that will help shape the future. We have a powerful role to play in elections in 2024 and beyond: our vision of a working climate and a working democracy depend in part on the people we elect to public office.

We bring perspective to these battles: we remember a time when our institutions worked better than they do now; we know, from decades of watching our political life, how bizarre and dangerous January 6th really was; we want to help bring our country back from the brink. That’s why we’re volunteering in huge numbers to make phone calls and knock on doors, and sometimes even to engage in civil disobedience.

But under our country’s current laws, we also need the flexibility that a PAC provides—the flexibility to speak out fully and frankly, not hemmed in by IRS regulations. If we’re going to help build a Silver Wave for this crucial election, GrayPAC is a crucial tool. We’ll need your help to fund it.

The more resources it has, the better this tool will work. We need your sweat above all—nothing is more important than the volunteer hours we all pour into this effort. But if you have some money that can be spared for this year’s fight, I’m convinced this will be one more powerful way to pool our energy and make a real, deep, and lasting difference!

FROM 350 SEATTLE:

We are calling on Senator Cantwell to endorse the recently reintroduced Break Free from Plastic Pollution Act. The world is drowning in plastic pollution; recent studies found the average American ingests 5 grams of plastics per week.

This is an urgent problem. The Break Free from Plastic Pollution Act is a full suite of policies aimed at curbing runaway plastic pollution and we need more Senators to endorse this Act, including Washington's Senator Cantwell.

TELL SENATOR CANTWELL TO ENDORSE THE BREAK FREE FROM PLASTIC POLLUTION ACT

The Break Free from Plastic Pollution Act will:

  • Ban non-recyclable single use plastic products.
  • Establish a moratorium on the approval of new and expanded plastic manufacturing facilities.
  • Prohibit the discharge of plastic pellets into waterways.
  • Start a national beverage container refund program.

Please take a moment to tell Sen. Cantwell that we need to halt the expansion of the plastic industry and heal the damage it's caused.

FROM THIRD ACT:   ELDERS WEEK STARTING JULY 8

Next week, join us on July 9th for an All-In Call with Stacey Abrams, and for Elders Week. Join Third Act working groups across the country for events and actions as a part of Summer of Heat. Summer of Heat kicked off in early June, and features ongoing direct actions aimed at disrupting Citibank's operations. The most notable event during the launch week occurred on June 13th, when 200 elders gathered at Citibank Plaza with songs and banners for Elders Day.

FROM 350.ORG

This summer, 350 groups and our partners at People’s Action are taking action across the country to make it clear: we’ve had enough of greedy for-profit utilities. Will you join us?

Behind every blocked solar policy and new gas pipeline, there's an evil utility collaborating with the fossil fuel industry and buying political influence. The 350 local group network has been fighting utilities for over a decade. This summer, we're banding together to tell this story to the world and to take back our power. Across the US, for-profit utilities are maximizing their power and profits instead of speeding the shift to safe, affordable, reliable, and clean energy. In 2020, 34 million U.S. households, or 27 percent of all households, reported difficulty paying their energy bills or kept their homes at an unsafe temperature because of energy cost concerns. Meanwhile, shareholders made bigger profits than ever.

This August 12-18th, the 350 Network Council and our partners at People's Action are leading the first ever week of action targeting the fossil fuel utility industry. We’ll send a clear message to our elected officials and utility companies through distributed actions with unified demands:
  1.     Affordable energy for all
   2.     Transition to renewable energy
   3.     Health and safety for ratepayers
   4.     Energy democracy

Fill out this interest form if you’re interested in organizing an action in your community between August 12-18th
, and we’ll follow up to support you in your planning! We will also have a map of actions, organizing toolkit (still finalizing edits), and more info coming soon.
