This bipartisan and bicameral legislation would create a new grant program to help states, localities, and regional coalitions increase housing supply, improve housing affordability, and reduce barriers to new housing development. Oregon has the second-highest percentage of homeless who are unsheltered, and I’ve been working toward bipartisan solutions that would address the housing shortage to help fix this crisis. As a former mayor, I’ll keep engaging with our local governments to solve problems like the housing shortages that have limited economic growth and opportunity. I questioned him on the failure of tolling plans across the country, including in Oregon, after voicing my strong opposition to tolling during similar hearings last year. Additionally, I discussed a proposal I recently helped introduce to streamline the federal permitting process – the FREE ACT – which would implement a “permit-by-rule” system. Implementing permit-by-rule would cut red tape and help speed up critical infrastructure projects like replacing the I-5 bridge. I’m glad Secretary Buttigieg agreed to work with us on this much-needed legislation.
