I wanted to take a moment to look back on some of the work I did this week.
1. Joined FOX 32 to Discuss Gun Violence in Chicago
On Tuesday, I joined FOX 32 to offer my thoughts on the U.S. Surgeon General declaring gun violence a public health crisis. Here in the United States, gun violence kills over 100 Americans each day. This announcement will help provide the nation with reliable research to support the study of gun violence and will help inform new policies that will make our communities safer. It is my hope that this warning will serve as a wake-up call to politicians who are unwilling to support common-sense solutions that can keep people safe. In Congress, I promise to continue supporting legislation, such the Assault Weapons Ban and Universal Background Checks, to prevent people from obtaining deadly weapons in the first place.
2. Reacted to SCOTUS Decision on Presidential Immunity
On Monday, the United States Supreme Court ruled that Donald Trump is partly immune from prosecution on charges that he plotted to subvert the 2020 election. For years, Democrats and Republicans alike have affirmed that no one is above the law - not even the President. With this disastrous decision, I believe the court rejected that understanding. If a President can immunize themselves from prosecution by claiming they acted under the banner of “official” responsibilities, then we no longer have a President: we have a King. I belief this decision is dangerously out of line with the ideals of our Founding Fathers and the principles of our democracy.
3. Celebrated Independence Day
Yesterday, I joined members of my community in celebrating Independence Day! It was wonderful to meet some new people in our district, enjoy some good food, and most importantly, honor those who have fought to protect the freedoms we enjoy. Ultimately, Independence Day is a reminder of the sacrifices servicemembers have made to ensure our freedom.
I hope you all had a safe and happy Fourth of July!
