Governor DeWine announces Ohio's first innovation hub in Toledo. [ [link removed] ]
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, Lt. Governor Jon Husted, and Ohio Department of Development Director Lydia Mihalik announced [ [link removed] ] the creation of Ohio's first Innovation Hub, a new collaboration that will enhance northwest Ohio's position as a global leader in glass science, engineering, technology, and production.
Supported by more than $31.3 million in state funding from the Ohio Innovation Hubs Program [ [link removed] ] and $10.4 million in local investment, the new Northwest Ohio Glass Innovation Hub will build on Toledo's legacy as the "Glass Capital of the World" to accelerate innovation and job growth in both the glass sector and solar industry, which relies heavily on glass.
“Innovation rarely happens without daring ideas and bold risks, and Ohio's new Glass Innovation Hub will be a groundbreaking example of what we can achieve when we build partnerships and promote collaboration," said Governor DeWine. "This new venture will enhance the Toledo region's competitiveness on a global scale, propelling northwest Ohio to the forefront of glass and solar innovation."
“The glass industry moved to northwest Ohio because of its proximity to natural resources, but its future growth will depend on innovation and talent. The innovation hub designation and funding will help make it more likely that companies and the region will have a more prosperous future," said Lt. Governor Husted. "I believe this innovation collaborative will lead to making glass products stronger, lighter, and with less energy, which will give the region’s glass companies a competitive advantage against their global competitors.”

Governor DeWine, Ohio Department of Development Director Mihalik, and Ohio Department of Transportation Director Jack Marchbanks cut the ribbon [ [link removed] ] on the newly re-imagined Ashtabula County I-90 westbound Welcome Center, unveiling a place that tells Ohio’s story of Lake Erie, Ashtabula County’s covered bridges, and so many other magnificent attractions.
The Ashtabula County Welcome Center, just inside Ohio’s northeastern border, features Ohio’s agritourism and fishing industries, Historic Ashtabula Harbor, Port Conneaut Marina, Holden Arboretum, Smolen-Gulf Covered Bridge, North Coast WWII Museum, Ashtabula Arts Center, Geneva State Park, James A. Garfield National Historic site, Hubbard House Underground Railroad Museum, Ashtabula County’s covered bridges, and the Lake Metroparks Farmpark. It’s part of Governor DeWine’s vision to greatly improve the traveler experience for the thousands of visitors who stop at Ohio rest areas every day.
“Ohio is the heart of it all - whether you’re visiting a Lake Erie beach, fishing for walleye, or touring a lighthouse or covered bridge, we want travelers to find their next vacation inspiration when they stop at our Ashtabula Welcome Center,” said Governor DeWine. “Outside the Ashtabula Welcome Center, families can stroll through the Ohio native plants and trees or the Storybook Trail, which features a Dolly Parton Imagination Library book.”

Safe Routes [ [link removed] ]
Governor DeWine and ODOT Director Jack announced [ [link removed] ] an investment of more than $8 million in projects that focus on the safety of children who walk or bike to school.
ODOT is awarding the funding as part of its Safe Routes to School [ [link removed] ] program, which supports education initiatives and builds infrastructure such as sidewalks and enhanced pedestrian crossings. This year, the program is funding 29 projects in 19 counties.
“Creating the opportunity for children to walk and bike to school is so important, and this funding will help communities ensure that these routes are as safe as possible,” said Governor DeWine. “Motorists should also do their part by paying attention, especially in and around schools.”

DeWine op-ed in Columbus Dispatch
Governor DeWine announced that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has approved [ [link removed] ] a proposal by the Ohio Department of Medicaid (ODM) that will incentivize nursing homes to make more private rooms available for residents.
The plan is part of the Governor’s comprehensive strategy to maximize the quality of care and quality of life experienced by nursing home residents across Ohio.
“Most nursing home residents tell us that a private room greatly improves their sense of dignity, autonomy, and comfort, and we know that private rooms produce better health outcomes for residents as well,” said Governor DeWine. “In Ohio, we have the capacity to provide a private room to every nursing home resident who wants one. Our proposal to make this a reality has now been approved by CMS and is also supported by the nursing home industry. We are working together to make private rooms more accessible in a way that’s ultimately a win for everyone.”
Governor DeWine wrote an op-ed in Gannett newspapers in Ohio about the funding approval. Read the full op-ed here. [ [link removed] ]

As part of Governor DeWine’s H2Ohio [ [link removed] ] Rivers program, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources awarded [ [link removed] ] a grant to Jefferson Soil and Water Conservation District to remove a low head dam in Carroll County that is impacting both water quality and fish habitat. The Riley Run dam, located along a tributary of Yellow Creek near the Village of Salineville, is scheduled for removal in 2025.
The H2Ohio Rivers program was announced [ [link removed] ] by Governor DeWine as an expansion of his statewide water quality initiative, H2Ohio. “H2Ohio is all about protecting and improving water quality in all of Ohio’s waterways, including rivers and streams,” said Governor Mike DeWine. “Part of the H2Ohio Rivers program is identifying and safely removing deteriorating dams that have outlived their intended use to improve our water quality and protect our natural resources.”
