Dear Friend,

After a busy week in eastern Connecticut, I’m here with an update on federal support for an early childhood center in New London and firefighters in Clinton. As always, thanks for starting your weekend here with me.

Celebrating Independence Day

I hope everyone in the Second District had a happy, fun, and safe Fourth of July – celebrating the greatest nation in the world.

Above all, thank you to our servicemembers, veterans, and military families who have bravely defended our freedom and protected our way of life.

America is a unique experiment in self-government by the people, for the people. On Independence Day, we recommit to working together, with all of our fellow Americans, in the never-ending pursuit of a more perfect union.

Yesterday, I joined the annual Willimantic Boombox Parade. At 39 years strong, this grassroots celebration of eastern Connecticut is one of the best patriotic traditions we have. It was great to see so many of you there!

Federal Funding Supports New London Early Childhood Center

On Monday, I visited the early childhood center at B.P. Learned Mission in New London. The center recently received $2 million in federal American Rescue plan funding for its Pre-K program, and this summer, the city’s Parks and Recreation Department and New London Public Schools are running a free summer enrichment program.

During my tour, we visited the new Welcome Center with New London Human Services. The center is a one-stop-shop for New London Public Schools families to access school services and job opportunities for parents.

Across eastern Connecticut, I’m working with providers, including the early childhood center at B.P. Mission, to secure funding in Congress so they can expand capacity at their centers. Addressing child care shortages meets a critical need for working families and uplifts our entire communities.

Federal Grants Allow the Clinton Fire Department to Purchase New Equipment

I recently stopped by the Clinton Fire Department to catch up with Fire Chief Brian Manware to discuss two federal Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFGs) the department has received, totaling over $60,000.

Image

In 2020, the Clinton Fire Department was awarded a $21,000 AFG which it used to purchase personal safety and rescue bailout systems. This is lifesaving equipment that allows a trapped firefighter to exit a building through a window.

Then, in 2023, the department was awarded a $40,000 AFG to purchase a new washer and dryer for cleaning gear and protective hoods for firefighters. High-grade equipment washing machines are a vital part of cancer prevention efforts at fire departments, limiting firefighter exposure to harmful toxins.

Thanks to Fire Chief Manware for updating me on how the Clinton Fire Department has put these federal grants to use. The all-volunteer team of firefighters work hard and take on risks to keep the Town of Clinton safe. I’ll keep working in Congress to provide the support they need.

Reminder: Share Your Top Priorities for Congress

Lastly this week, I want to hear your top priorities for Congress. Share your thoughts below by taking my mid-year issues survey.

Time and time again in the divided 118th Congress, bipartisan compromise has been the only proven pathway to keep Washington moving. I'm reaching across the aisle and working with my Republican colleagues whenever and wherever possible to continue delivering on what matters most to eastern Connecticut.

Thank you for taking some time to read my update. If we can be of any assistance, don't hesitate to give my Norwich office a call at (860) 886-0139. Have a great weekend!

Sincerely,

Joe Courtney
Member of Congress
