The U.S. Supreme Court decided that cities can enforce bans on unhoused people sleeping outdoors. This ruling concludes a prolonged legal battle over whether such bans constitute cruel and unusual punishment under the Eighth Amendment.
This decision allows cities to criminalize public camping without providing adequate shelter alternatives. But that action only creates a situation that serves to exacerbate the plight of unhoused individuals and fails to address the root causes of homelessness.

Recent legislative efforts to address the issue include the Ending Homelessness Act, a bill that would ensure universal rental assistance for all households in need and tackle discrimination against renters.
