Yesterday, The Seattle Times reported that Alaska's Juneau icefield is melting nearly 5 times faster than in the 1980s. We are witnessing alarming environmental changes, it's crucial we understand how this rapid loss threatens local ecosystems and cultural landmarks here in Washington State.

As a Native leader, when I read stories like this I also think of the indigenous communities that are impacted. For the Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian people of Sealaska who have lived in the lands around Juneau for generations, the loss of this icefield brings both tremendous loss of cultural heritage and a renewed urgency to address climate change.

Rising temperatures, melting glaciers, and shifting weather patterns could drastically alter our way of life. As your next Commissioner of Public Lands, I am committed to implementing sustainable practices that protect our environment and preserve it for future generations.

The Seattle Times endorsed me not just because of my vision, but because of my proven track record and deep understanding of these critical issues. My experience makes me the only candidate who can lead effective responses to environmental challenges and to ensure that we're not just reacting to changes, but actively working to mitigate them.

While I am so proud to have earned the support of the Seattle Times, there’s another endorsement that is top of mind for me at this moment – that of Rosita Worl, an elder and leader of Sealaska, the organization that represents the Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian people in Juneau. I will never stop fighting to live up to the faith she and so many others have invested in me, that’s why I feel so strongly about this ask. Will you join me in calling for bold, immediate action to address climate change and protect our natural heritage? We need 2,500 signatures by midnight to make an impact.
