A Message from Gabe:
Greetings Rhode Islanders,
I hope this message finds you well and that you are enjoying the Fourth of July holiday weekend in Rhode Island or wherever you are celebrating.
I want you to be aware of a special event – a Telephone Town Hall – that I am hosting to hear directly from constituents of Rhode Island’s First Congressional District on Tuesday, July 9, 2024, at 6:00 PM
Since our offices opened in Pawtucket and Washington, I have been working around the clock to make Rhode Island's voice heard in Congress. Since coming to Congress, I have committed to keeping our government open and voted to ensure our troops are paid, our Social Security administration functions, and essential programs that low-income and working families depend on remain operational.
Your trust is important to me, and I am dedicated to meeting the needs of our First Congressional District. As I take stock of the time that has passed, I am interested in hearing directly from YOU about your priorities for the rest of the year.
This Telephone Town Hall is an opportunity for us to connect directly and discuss the issues that matter most to Rhode Island. During the call, I will provide updates on my recent activities in Congress, including my work to combat gun violence, reduce prescription drug and health care costs, increase affordable housing opportunities, and strengthen Social Security and Medicare for our seniors. And I look forward to speaking with many of you to address any questions or concerns you may have.
Constituents can join the Telephone Town Hall at amo.house.gov/live at 6:00 PM on July 9th. I would be grateful for your participation. It is through conversations like these that I can better serve you and our communities. I look forward to speaking with many of you and addressing any questions or concerns you may have.
I am honored to serve Rhode Island's First Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives, and I am excited about what we can accomplish together.
If you have any immediate questions or would like more information about the event, please feel free to contact me through my website or by calling our Pawtucket office at 401-729-5600 or our Washington D.C. office at 202-225-4911.
| Sincerely, |

The U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy issued an advisory declaring gun violence a public health crisis on June 25, 2024.
The advisory underscores the extensive impact of gun violence, especially on children, adolescents, and marginalized communities.
It calls for critical research investments, community-based violence prevention programs, safe gun storage laws, universal background checks, and enhanced mental health resources.
The Surgeon General is rightly working to foster safer environments and reduce the physical and emotional harm caused by gun violence.

President Joe Biden’s Administration announced new initiatives to protect communities and workers from extreme weather.
These include a proposed Occupational Safety and Health Administration rule establishing federal safety standards for excessive workplace heat, nearly $1 billion in Federal Emergency Management Agency awards for disaster resilience projects, and a new Environmental Protection Agency report on climate change impacts.
The initiatives will improve worker safety, reduce economic damage, and enhance community preparedness for extreme weather events.

Connecting with Rhode Islanders

I was thrilled to speak on my work in Congress as a Member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs and toast the 4th of July with Day of Portugal Rhode Island!
When the Declaration of Independence was signed, it was toasted with Madeira wine — So we celebrate our country's 248th birthday just as our founders did. |

It was great to connect with so many constituents in our community and speak on my work in Congress at
Culture Fest Rhode Island
in Providence!

 |
Last week, the winners of the Congressional Art Competition flew down to DC — including Vivian from Barrington who traveled with her family (and on her birthday too!)
Congrats to Vivian and all the winners!
See her winning submission, “Burnout,” hanging in the
U.S. Capitol. |

It’s electric! I was proud to speak on my work in Congress and celebrate the completion of our first electric bus in-line charging station!
With greener buses, cleaner air, and healthier residents, I am working to put federal investments to use in the Ocean State. |

I was grateful to visit
The Rhode Island Black Business Association's new headquarters in Providence and speak with them on my work in Congress to help entrepreneurs grow their reach and better contribute to our local economy.

Honored to meet with The Rhode Island Police Chiefs Association, dedicated to serving our community and fostering trust between the public and law enforcement.
I am committed to working with our local law enforcement officers as we work to keep Rhode Islanders safe in every community. |

Leading the Promotion of Safe Gun Storage
Congressman Amo meets with gun safety advocates in his office to discuss common-sense measures like safe storage legislation.
Last week, I helped introduce H.R. 8877, the Storing All Firearms Effectively and Safely (SAFES) Act, alongside some of my colleagues. The legislation would create a 90% refundable tax credit of up to $500 for individuals or $1000 for couples to purchase gun safes. The SAFES Act would make gun safes more affordable, helping responsible gun owners store their guns safely. Safe gun storage is critical to preventing unnecessary death and tragedy.
