Dear John,

So, after 14 years of Conservative rule the UK now has a Labour government with a gigantic majority.

Whether you’re celebrating the change or nervous about the future there’s no denying this is a historic moment.

And boy have we got a lot to persuade Keir Starmer to tackle. The UK’s climate plan is pathetic – and unlawful. Our natural world is dying. But with your help with a monthly donation, we believe we can steer the UK towards a future that's better for climate and nature.

In the next 6 months we need your help to:

Make good on our landmark legal case. We proved the last government’s climate plan was unlawful. The new government has till May to replace it. For the sake of future generations we have to make sure it’s good enough.

Create a stink about beaches and rivers full of sewage and all the other polluted parts of the UK. And win support for a law that would allow us all to live in a healthy environment.

Investigate the links between habitat destruction and land-grabbing overseas, and greedy businesses back home.

Stop the proposed Cumbria coal mine and persuade the new PM to reverse Rishi Sunak’s new oil and gas licences.

So please, if you can, set up a monthly donation today to help power this crucial period of campaigning.

A new government means new opportunities to win essential protections for people and the planet.

Under the last Labour government we won the Climate Change Act. The very law we used to challenge – and defeat – the Conservatives’ climate plan.

And before yesterday’s vote you helped us persuade Labour to commit to achieving the UK’s crucial climate targets. Including cutting emissions by more than two-thirds by 2030.

But we’re not naïve. Our manifesto scoring highlighted some glaring holes in Labour's manifesto. We need to convince them to up their ambition. Over the past few years we’ve developed good relationships with politicians of all stripes. So, we need your help to make the most of this opportunity.

£10 can help fund our legal team to hold the new government to account.

£5 can support our policy and insight team to conduct vital research on climate solutions. Like renewable power and home insulation.

£3 can help fund our data team to uncover evidence of where pollution is happening.

People voted for change. Now we need to see real leadership that seizes the huge opportunities that investment in green growth can deliver – such as lower bills, hundreds of thousands of new jobs in clean industries, a healthier and more prosperous economy, and a safe planet for future generations.

Thanks for everything you’ve done to be a friend of the earth this election.

Best wishes,

Abdi
