Your General Election Results Briefing from the Liberal Democrats



Good morning John,

This has been an astonishing set of results for the Liberal Democrats - we’ve
played our part in delivering a historic defeat to the Conservative Party.

The Liberal Democrats are back as a major force in British politics.

Our incredible, positive General Election campaign has delivered our best
result in the history of our party, electing local champions across the country
who will fight for the Fair Deal you and your community deserve.

We could not have done this without our dedicated members and supporters –
thank you.

We'll be analysing the full results over the coming days, but here's an upate
on where we are as of 8:30am, with just a handful of seats left to be declared.



The Liberal Democrats are once again the third party in Westminster.

We now have 71 MPs.

We have gained 63 seats and increased our vote share.

We have unseated four Conservative cabinet ministers:

Education Secretary, Gillian Keegan – Chichester

Justice Secretary, Alex Chalk – Cheltenham

Science Secretary, Michelle Donelan – Melksham and Devizes

Culture Secretary, Lucy Frazer – Ely and East Cambridgeshire

We have won in three Conservative ex-Prime Ministers' seats: Maidenhead
(Theresa May), Henley (Boris Johnson), and Witney (David Cameron).

We are back in the West Country, with gains in former safe Conservative seats
like Torbay and Tewkesbury.

Congratulations to our elected MPs and their teams, and a huge thank you to
everybody who stepped up and stood for our party.

everything you did to help make these incredible results happen.
