We will keep pushing Government for the funding we need to support local residents, businesses and key workers

A message from City Council Deputy Leader Cllr Sally Longford:

Stay home graphic

I want to thank those of you who once again resisted temptation to meet up at the weekend, and stuck to public health and Government guidance to stay at home and stay apart when out for the limited approved reasons. We?re all looking forward to a time when our streets and parks can be thronging again but for now, it?s reassuring to see them so quiet as Nottingham peopleplay their part in preventing further spread of the virus.

Financial support for local councils

Last week, Councillor Mellen wrote to the Prime Minister to express concerns about the consequence of the Government not providing further financial support for local authorities, particularly at a time of a national crisis. We are committed to supporting the people in our city but the scale of the challenge facing councils makes it clear that adequately supporting local councils during this time is vitally important. That is why yesterday?s announcement of a further ?1.6bn for local authorities across the country is welcome and will certainly help, but we know it will not be anything like enough to cover the additional costs we have in areas like homelessness support, adult social care, food parcel distribution and support for people coming out of hospital. I want to reassure Nottingham people that we will continue to lobby Government on behalf of our residents, our fantastic workers and businesses to provide sufficient financial support to cover additional costs throughout this national crisis.

Your city needs you: become part of the social care front line

Carers across the city are providing a vital lifeline for many of our most vulnerable people and we are still urgently seeking staff. The more we can look after people in their own homes rather than in hospital, the more the NHS can focus on saving lives. We have a number of opportunities for those looking to give something back during this time.

  • You will be fully paid
  • You will be trained ? no previous experience is necessary, just a desire to care for others
  • Your DBS check will be paid for
  • We will support your application; interviews will be carried out by phone
  • Work will be assigned close to your home
  • You will be designated ?critical worker? status
  • Personal protective equipment will be provided when needed

Whether you are thinking about returning to the sector or starting a new career you can find more information and how to apply here.

Staying home and staying active

I know that many children would be looking forward to returning to school this week, seeing their friends again and getting back to a daily routine. It is obvious that Nottingham parents have worked incredibly hard and imaginatively to keep children occupied at home and I thank you for this. To find more activities to keep your family entertained check out our StayingHOME webpage ? you can find resources here to help you stay happy and healthy at home.
