[[link removed]] An Avocado Story: The Tale of a Non-sweet Fruit

Time and time again, the avocado has been praised for its content of monounsaturated fats, and dubbed a “healthy fat” food for cardiovascular and metabolic health. Research indeed supports these claims. Less talked about are its benefits for maintaining a healthy gut microbiome, and its early start as an aphrodisiac in ancient cultures. Due to deforestation in Mexico, where 80% of California avocados come from, it’s critical to purchase organic, fair trade, or grown in CA.

[[link removed]] The Benefits of Berberine: Supplement Considerations for Type 2 Diabetes

While the pharmaceutical, metformin, is the number one drug prescribed for type 2 diabetes and prediabetes, its side effects are to be taken seriously. Stomach pain is the most common complaint from patients, and though not common, lactic acidosis is a concern if your kidneys or liver are compromised. In fact, the FDA gave metformin a “black box warning.” Berberine on the other hand is effective at managing blood sugar levels, is beneficial for cardiovascular health, and has virtually no side effects. There is plenty of research to back up its efficacy, and it’s widely-available.

[[link removed]] Eye Health Part One: The Nutrition You Need to Protect and Restore Your Vision

Prevention is key for maintaining the health of your eyes. Dietary nutrients such as antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids are a good place to start. Ditching processed sugars and excess refined carbohydrates is also part of smart eye care. One mistake people make is underestimating what you cannot see. If you wait for symptoms to occur, greater damage may have already set in. Get a jump start no mater your age or current health status.

[[link removed]] Eye Health Part Two: Exams, Procedures, and Integrative Specialists (Plus the Advancement of Ocular AI)

Nutrition and lifestyle were covered in part one of our eye health series. In part two, optometrists and ophthalmologists who practice preventative eye care and use holistic and integrative methods for treatment are discussed. Such modalities might include homeopathy and acupuncture. In addition, typical eye exam tests are explained, and the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) in the ocular field, particularly to diagnose diabetic retinopathy is explored.

During the second half of June 2024, AVFCA brought awareness to specific observance days by sharing our original stories that matched these themes:

Summer Solstice 2024 : “Cold Water Therapy: An Investment for Your Mind, Body, and Spirit”

Cold water therapy, also known as “the cold plunge,” is as invigorating as it is shocking. It’s certainly not for the faint of heart, but if you can fathom submerging yourself in bone-chilling waters (or an ice cold shower), you’ll be happy to hear about the mental and physical health benefits. Research shows this practice reduces stress and inflammation, and also builds immunity. [link removed] [[link removed]]

Insect Week : “Conventional Insect Repellents: Bug Sprays That Pose a Danger to You and Your Environment”

The research for this story was an exploration of the creepy crawler world of insects, mosquitos, and their chemical-counterpart repellents and sprays. History (including Big CHEM), health concerns, and natural alternatives were shared. DIY bug sprays made with essential oils were included. [link removed] [[link removed]]

Our team also reads hundreds of articles each week, and those of interest are shared on our social media platforms. However, once or twice a week, our team reads an article that is profound or shares a perspective that is new or from an expert that AVFCA feels should be highlighted. These articles are shared on our Substack.
