John, I want to wish you and your family a happy and safe Fourth of July. And today, I want to share with you my family’s story, a story that sustains my hope for our country.
I’m the granddaughter of a Greek immigrant who was always proud of his roots but even prouder to be an American citizen. He immigrated through Ellis Island before building a home for his family in South Georgia. When I was a child, he taught me about Greek culture, food, and religion so when I was sworn into Congress, I took my oath of office on his Greek bible.
My father proudly served in the U.S. Air Force and was a public servant for years working for the city of Henderson which I now represent. He instilled in me a deep belief that we should help those who need the most, not those who have the most.
Every day I am proud to fight for the families of Nevada’s First District. We’ve accomplished a lot in recent years, but I know that many Southern Nevadans are still in need of a helping hand.
So today, while we celebrate our independence and how far we’ve come, we must also acknowledge how far we have to go towards building an economy that supports everyone, a democracy that is fair and equal, and a country where everyone has the same rights, regardless of what state they live in.
And I promise, John, I will keep fighting for you and your family, just like I would fight for mine. Have a safe and fun July 4th with family and friends!
Thank you for reading,
Dina
