Six great places to swim at Nebraska’s state parks

Looking for a place to cool off this summer? Nebraska's state parks and recreation areas have some great options — everything from an aquatic center with all the amenities to a white sand beach with plenty of shoreline. Here are six options to try this summer.

Fireworks reflect over a lake
Four parks will allow fireworks on July 4

Those hoping to touch off some fireworks on the Fourth will have the opportunity at four state recreation areas this year: Branched Oak, Pawnee, Wagon Train and Memphis. Look for signs pointing to designated areas. Fireworks are permitted from 8 a.m. until midnight on July 4 only.

If you've been seeing turkeys lately, we want to hear about it! The public is invited to participate in Nebraska Game and Parks' annual summer turkey brood survey through Aug. 31. Report any turkeys you see on Game and Parks' website [ [link removed] ], which will help biologists better understand turkey populations.

Prizes awarded in second Nebraska Birding Bowl

More than 250 people, including 68 youth, participated in the second Nebraska Birding Bowl, a free, statewide birding competition through Nebraska Game and Parks, the Wild Bird Habitat Store [ [link removed] ] and Audubon Great Plains [ [link removed] ]. Names have been drawn for prizes, including a two-night state park cabin stay, binoculars and a bird feeding system. Congratulations to our winners!
