We re-commit ourselves to celebrating our history and the ideals of the Declaration of Independence.

Dear Fellow Conservative,

Four years ago, amidst protests and unrest across the country, I visited Independence Hall in Philadelphia.

Standing where our founders debated and voted to break away from the Crown, I was reminded of the profound significance of the day many thought would be celebrated as Independence Day...

July 2nd, 1776.

John Adams, writing to Abigail about that day, captured the essence of the moment and why we celebrate nearly 250 years later:

"...the greatest question was decided which ever was debated in America, and a greater perhaps never was nor will be decided among men. A resolution was passed without one dissenting colony that these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent states... The second day of July 1776 will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America... It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations from one end of this continent to the other from this time forward forevermore. You will think me transported with enthusiasm, but I am not. I am well aware of the toil, the blood, and the treasure that it will cost us to maintain this declaration and support and defend these states. Yet, through all the gloom, I can see the rays of ravishing light and glory."

Centuries later, there are significant threats to our hard-won liberties.

Government overreach, threats to free speech, and the erosion of our constitutional rights remind us that the fight for freedom is ongoing.

However, like Adams, I believe that ultimately liberty will win the day and that, out of the gloom—"rays of ravishing light and glory."

Today, as we enjoy parades and fireworks, let's remember why we celebrate. Let's honor the vision of our founders who, despite their differences, united to establish a nation where freedom and liberty prevail.

In the spirit of Independence Day, let us recommit to preserving these ideals for future generations.

May we always strive to uphold the values that define us as Americans.
