Dear Friend,

Today, 248 years ago, our Founding Fathers signed the Declaration of Independence, announcing our our separation from Great Britain and our intention to form a new nation.

Penned primarily by Thomas Jefferson, the Declaration of Independence detailed early Americans' grievances with King George III's tyrannical reign over the colonies. More importantly, the Declaration made the case that government derives its power from the "consent of the governed," not the select few.  It is "instituted among men," who are created equal and endowed by their creator with rights no one can take away.

To paraphrase Dr. Benjamin Franklin, the American Revolution was the cause of all mankind and a hope for the world.  Our Founders--and those who fought the American Revolution--were not just fighting for their freedoms, but the liberty of all peoples.

We celebrate Independence Day to mark this important event in world history and celebrate our pride in the American ideal. Every Independence Day is also a profound recommitment to our most foundational principles: life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. I am honored to fight for you and these rights every day in Congress.

While America is not perfect, we continue to strive for a more perfect nation. It’s a privilege to represent you. I wish you and your family a safe Independence Day!
