Dear John, Happy Independence Day! Like each one of us, our nation has a birthday: this year, the United States of America turns 248 years old! America was founded on a set of ideals and firmly held beliefs. Central to our identity as a nation is the belief that we are all created equal and have inherent rights. The Declaration of Independence beautifully proclaims: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” The Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments of the Bill of Rights also assure all Americans that neither the federal government nor the states may deprive us "of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law.” As Americans, we pride ourselves on thinking that these crucial rights apply to everyone, regardless of age, sex, color, or creed. Sadly, our current laws do NOT recognize or protect the fundamental rights of the most vulnerable among us: the unborn. It shouldn’t be this way.
This Fourth of July, we celebrate our cherished rights and freedoms – and we look forward to the day when ALL of us, including and especially the most vulnerable, are assured of an equal RIGHT TO LIFE. From all of us at Oregon Right to Life – |
