John,
As we take today to celebrate the spirit of freedom that defines the Fourth of July with family and friends, we cannot ignore the true meaning behind the holiday.
Frederick Douglass said it well in his 1852 address, "What to the Slave is the Fourth of July:"
The blessings in which you, this day, rejoice, are not enjoyed in common. The rich inheritance of justice, liberty, prosperity and independence, bequeathed by your fathers, is shared by you, not by me. The sunlight that brought light and healing to you, has brought stripes and death to me. This Fourth July is yours, not mine. You may rejoice, I must mourn.
When the Founding Fathers signed the Declaration of Independence, their vision of democracy for all was exclusively for white land-owning men.
But today, with the power of representation from unapologetically Black politicians, we are closer to transforming their vision of democracy into our nation’s reality. The Collective PAC proudly stands behind our candidates as they are on-the-ground in defense of democracy and freedom for all.
So take a moment today to honor our nation’s origins, but also to honor the sacrifices made by Black Americans to promise freedom and equality for all Americans of all backgrounds.
Wishing you and your loved ones a Happy Fourth of July,
The Collective PAC
The Collective PAC is strategically focused on creating a truly equitable democracy where our nation’s local, state and federal governments have diverse and talented elected leadership and Black people are fully represented in positions of
power to create the policies necessary to progress our communities forward. Since our inception in 2016, we have helped 110 candidates win general elections at the local, state and federal levels. We strive to support the next wave of
progressive and unapologetic Black candidates who will usher in a sea of change in our political system while helping America fulfill its promise of democracy by creating a government that will truly be for the people and of the people.
