Today, on July Fourth, we celebrate America. The only nation built on an idea.
Our nation waged a war based on the revolutionary idea that everyday people ought to govern themselves.
That we will swear fealty to no king.
That each of us is equal under the law.
A few days ago, our Supreme Court overruled our founding principle. Now, while ordinary folks are expected to follow the law, conservatives on the Court have decided presidents are free to break it.
That's not hyperbole.
I fear the Supreme Court's decision will embolden Donald Trump to sow even more chaos and destruction.
He has already promised to be a dictator on "Day One." To purge dedicated public servants across our government. To enact a brutal campaign of revenge and retribution that echoes the likes of Nazi Germany.
But, I give you my word as a Biden: As long as I'm president, we're not walking away from our ideals, our alliances, or our democracy.
We're
still a nation where hate has no safe harbor.
We're
still a nation that is a beacon of hope to the world.
We're
still a nation in which the law is meant to be followed -- not defied.
As long as you are with me, I will not let Donald Trump destroy what America stands for.
We just have to remember who we are. We are the United States of America, and there is nothing beyond our capacity when we act together.
God bless you all, and Happy Fourth of July.
Joe
Joe Biden
President of the United States
