John:
At a time when the Supreme Court has gutted essential civil and voting rights, taken away the right to choose, enforced presidential immunity and plans to hear a defining case on trans rights, celebrating our democracy feels different this year.
As we reflect on the nation's revolutionary founding claims of "certain inalienable Rights" and "Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness", it's more apparent than ever that our common dreams are not always as common as we'd like.
And all too often, those ready to rollback equality are the same people ready to question the foundations of our democracy. As they pass legislation targeting trans kids or drag queens, they're also questioning the validity of our election results or the viability of our candidates. These people want to limit who can participate in our government - and who can make the laws we all must live under.
But throughout history, social progress has been forged through uncommon courage in the face of enormous challenges. The American Revolution, the abolition of slavery, universal suffrage, the 8-hour work day, reproductive choice and marriage equality were all driven by those who refused to be confined by the status quo. Pro-equality leaders are following in their footsteps today.
Right now, there aren't enough of us in government. We see the consequences every time an anti-LGBTQ bill is passed, when our rights are once again debated on the floor. We see it when our courts contest our rights and seek to roll them backwards.
True representative democracy that is of the people, by the people and for the people is once again at risk. Only together can we ensure it remains secure. We are proud to support and stand with LGBTQ+ leaders who are fighting for these inalienable rights - and are fighting for a more secure democracy for us all.
Happy 4th,
Elliot Imse
