Friend—It’s been 248 years since the Founding Fathers met in Philadelphia and declared to the world that all men are created equal. Ever since then, America has strove to live up to those words enshrined in the Declaration of Independence.
Yet the struggle to live up to the values of that document has lasted for as long as the nation has existed. From the fight to end slavery, to the suffrage ensured by the 19th Amendment, to the Civil Rights movement, America has slowly yet surely fought its way to a freer and more just society.
And the work continues.
Today, many rights remain under threat. The right to an abortion is no longer a freedom guaranteed by our Constitution, our voting rights remain under constant attack, and our nation experienced its first failure to conduct a peaceful transition of power just three years ago.
Now, the Supreme Court has done the unthinkable and proclaimed that Donald Trump has near-total immunity for “official” acts as president – and that, unlike we were taught, one person is above the law.
If we are to live up to the example that the Founding Fathers and Americans before us have set for centuries, we must fight harder than ever to ensure that the American Experiment lives on.
Happy Independence Day, friend.
Yours in the fight,
WisDems
