Dear Godalming and Ash constituents,


I am immensely proud to have served as MP for many of you over the last 19 years. But I am even prouder to live in a democracy where today you may choose to remove me.


I arrived in parliament on a sunny day in May 2005 completely naive about what a career in public life involved. Thanks to the trust you placed in me I have been Culture Secretary responsible for the Olympics, Health Secretary, Foreign Secretary and Chancellor. I haven’t got everything right and nor have the governments in which I have served. But I truly believe that we did the most important thing you expect of Conservatives: to sort out the economy when it got into difficulties. Despite a global financial crisis, a pandemic and Ukraine, unemployment has halved, growth has been higher than any large European economy, foreign investment has been higher than anywhere in the world except the US and China and inflation has been tamed.


If – as seems likely – the country decides to change the government today, I promise to do two things if I am elected as your MP.


Firstly I will fight for positive change in our area. I want to get the new Cancer and Surgical Innovation Centre built at the Royal Surrey, the Community Diagnostic Centre completed at Milford, more facilities at Cranleigh Village Hospital and faster GP access in Ash. It would be wonderful (not least for me and Poppy!) if the Surrey Hills were protected for generations by becoming a national park. And I want to sort out mobile reception in our villages (and actually Godalming). You’ve seen me in action locally – that will never change.


Secondly I will use my experience of government to provide really effective scrutiny of the new Labour government. All governments are better if their plans are properly examined in the House of Commons – and as a former minister that is something I can do.


This isn’t just my constituency – it’s my home. It’s where I grew up and where I got married. I love the area so much and I truly believe there is so much more we can achieve together. I fully understand that voting for me may mean putting aside your views about some of the things that have happened in recent years – but if you do so I promise to repay your trust.
