A weekly wrap of ADL’s reports, updates and analysis on antisemitism around the world.

This Week’s Topline

Lawsuit Against Iran, Syria and North Korea for 10/7 Victims

On Monday, ADL and Crowell & Moring LLP filed a federal lawsuit on behalf of more than 125 victims of Hamas’ 10/7 attack in Israel, alleging Iran, Syria and North Korea provided material support to Hamas to commit the atrocities.

While nothing will ever undo the unbearable pain Hamas caused that day, there must be some justice for the suffering of those impacted, and ADL is uniquely qualified to pursue justice through this litigation. We’re seeking accountability and financial compensation for U.S. citizens or family members of U.S. citizens who were injured or killed in the October 7 massacre.

“Iran is the world’s leading state sponsor of antisemitism and terror — along with Syria and North Korea, they must be held responsible for their roles in the largest antisemitic attack since the Holocaust. In a world in which Jewish pain and suffering is far too often erased, we hope this ground-breaking case will bring justice to some victims and create a record of Hamas’ heinous brutality perpetrated with the support of these state sponsors of terrorism,“ said Jonathan Greenblatt, ADL CEO.

Note: ADL is also leading efforts to support Reps. Mike Lawler (R-NY) and Josh Gottheimer’s (D-NJ) The American Victims of Terrorism Compensation Act, which would ensure victims of state-sponsored terror are able to collect their judgments from the U.S. Victims of State Sponsored Terrorism (USVSST) Fund.

Debunking the Denial and Distortion of 10/7 Terror Attack: False narratives about Hamas’ brutal massacre of innocent civilians in Israel on 10/7 have infiltrated social media since hours after the attack occurred. Extremists and conspiracy theorists promote this mis- and disinformation about the reality of Hamas’ unprecedented, multi-pronged attack on Israel in order to deny or minimize the tragedy and shift the blame towards victims. Some of the more prominent falsehoods include claiming Israel is responsible for 10/7 — a claim well-known white supremacist Nick Fuentes has suggested; Hamas didn’t target or kill any civilians on 10/7 — which has been supported
by National Students for Justice in Palestine (NSJP); and that hostages taken by Hamas on 10/7 were treated well and adored their captors.

Anti-Israel ‘Summer School’ Is in Session: While most anti-Israel encampments have been dismantled, the groups behind them are still at work. From now through August, local and national Pro-Palestine individuals and groups are holding “summer school,“ aimed at educating and training student and community activists. Among those offering the programs are National Students for Justice in Palestine, SUNY BDS, UMass Amherst + Smith SJPs and San Francisco State University associate professor Rabab Abdulhadi, all of whom are supporters of the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement. The curricula vary among the schools, but sessions generally focus on Palestinian
history, political action and practical skills training.

Colleges and Universities at Work to Fight Antisemitism: In recent weeks, several college and university Task Forces on Antisemitism released reports containing recommendations to counter antisemitism on campus. While there have been no groundbreaking new calls to action, the reports stress the importance of increased transparency in reporting and the robust enforcement of codes of conduct. The reports also emphasize the proactive work that schools must undertake to improve campus climate more broadly, including offering antisemitism education to staff, faculty, and students along with creating facilitated opportunities for students to engage in civil discourse. While the reports fall

Campus Antisemitism Report Card and Best Practices Toolkit, at a minimum, we hope these schools will begin to take the basic steps outlined by their task forces. All colleges and universities must use the summer to assess what went wrong on their campuses to ensure a more inclusive environment for Jewish members of the campus community as they return to school in the fall.

Nearly 200 gravestones were vandalized at two Jewish cemeteries in Ohio. This is a heartbreaking display of antisemitic hate. We stand with the Jewish community of Cincinnati and hope the perpetrators are brought to justice for this desecration.

School may be out for summer, but anti-Israel student groups are still at it — showing support for violence & terror against Israel. This past week, Hunter College’s Palestine Solidarity Alliance posted an image of individuals carrying weapons with “glory to our resistance” to their Instagram stories, and both Gallatin Palestine Solidarity Coalition & John Jay SJP shared propaganda from Hamas’ armed wing, the Al Qassam Brigades.

Yesterday, SCOTUS vacated and remanded the misguided TX and FL social media laws that, had they been upheld, could have unleashed new waves of antisemitism, hate and harassment online. We will continue to fight to both hold platforms accountable AND ensure they can enforce their terms of service against hate speech.

Jewish institutions in Canada have repeatedly been targeted since Hamas’ 10/7 massacre. The attack on a Toronto synagogue this morning caused significant damage. We stand with Canada’s Jewish community and thank the @TorontoPolice for investigating this act as a hate crime.
