Evangelicals Urge Congress to Pursue Pro-Marriage Immigration Policy Changes - A coalition of evangelical Christian leaders recently sent a letter to Members of Congress, affirming a new immigration policy announced by the Biden administration. “As evangelical Christians, one of our core principles as we address immigration policy is a belief that God has ordained the family unit and thus that immigration policies should protect the unity of the immediate family,” the letter notes. “Marriage, in particular, was ordained by God in Creation. Reflecting on this truth, Jesus tells his disciples, ‘What God has joined together, let no one separate’ (Matthew 19:6 NIV).” The letter concludes: “The best way forward … is for the Congress to act, bridging partisan divides to pass legislation that would accomplish these pro-family goals.”

Sen. Cruz Introduces Legislation to Allow Uniformed Servicemembers to Participate in Flag Unfurling at Sporting Events - Since September 11, 2001, patriotic observances have become common at major sports events. Those observances often include the unfurling of a large American flag. The U.S. Flag Code (contained in Title 4 of U.S. Code) prohibits carrying the American flag horizontally. In February 2023, the Department of Defense issued a memorandum prohibiting uniformed servicemembers from participating in the unfurling of large flags at sporting events because those flags are unfurled and displayed horizontally. The UNFURL Act revises the Flag code to clarify that Department of Defense personnel may participate in such patriotic displays and rescinds that Department of Defense memo.

House Passes FY25 Appropriations Bill with Provision to Withhold U.S. Funding to Mexico Over Water Payment Noncompliance - Legislation that includes language to withhold U.S. funding to Mexico until it meets its legally obligated water payments to the U.S. passed the House on Friday, underscoring the urgent need for action. The legislation passed a day after Congresswoman Monica De La Cruz (TX-15) led a letter to the Secretary of Agriculture urging faster relief payments to sugar growers who lost their livelihoods due to Mexico’s lack of water deliveries. The State Department has failed to secure meaningful progress with Mexico’s government on delivering water guaranteed to South Texas under the 1944 water treaty between the two nations, necessitating the inclusion of this language in the appropriations bill.
