Dear Friend,
Before you head out to fireworks, barbeques, and some much needed family
time, I want to share with you something really important regarding our
reproductive rights. Your voice is making a difference! There were
multiple attacks by far-right extremists on our reproductive rights that
happened in June–including abortion care, contraception, and fertility
healthcare.
We want to make sure you have the most up-to-date information and that you
join us in taking action!
[ [link removed] ]***SIGN our letter now calling on our elected leaders to protect and
restore our reproductive rights, including abortion care, contraception,
IVF, abortion medication. (If we already have your information you will be
automatically signed on to our letter.)
June was a hell of a month! It marked two years since the U.S. Supreme
Court overturned Roe v. Wade. Since that time, but especially in the past
few weeks, we’ve seen attack after attack in a variety of manners from
far-right extremist anti-abortion activists. We’ve won some important
fights and lost others—but one thing remains true: we need you to keep
speaking out, keep contacting your elected leaders, keep telling your
stories, and keep voting in order to protect and regain our reproductive
rights!
Here’s the Top 4 things that happened in June that impact our reproductive
rights:
1. Medical Abortions (Mifepristone): In what we are considering a win,
anti-abortion extremists took a case all the way to the U.S. Supreme
Court that could have imposed a national ban on the safe and effective
medication for abortion and miscarriage care, Mifepristone– a
medication that’s proven to be safer than Tylenol. Luckily, they voted
that there was no standing to bring the case and Mifepristone remains
available and legal. [1] MomsRising was a lead in an amicus brief to
SCOTUS submitting hundreds of thousands of petitions – and together,
we made a positive impact.
2. Contraception: U.S. Senate Republicans voted down the Right to
Contraception Act–a bill that would have protected the right to obtain
and use contraceptives: Condoms, IUDs, the pill, the patch, Plan B,
and other safe and effective ways to prevent pregnancy. [ [link removed] ] Their
rejection of this bill is in direct opposition to the fact that 9 out
of 10 people believe birth control should be legal and three-quarters
of people have used some form of birth control in their lifetime. [ [link removed] ]
3. Fertility Healthcare/IVF: U.S. Senate Republicans also blocked the
Right to IVF Act–a bill that would guarantee the right to reproductive
healthcare, like in-vitro fertilization (IVF) and make it more
affordable to people looking to start or grow their families. [ [link removed] ]
4. Emergency Care for Pregnant Women: In a landmark decision, the U.S.
Supreme Court ruled 6-3 to allow (for now) a federal law requiring
hospitals and doctors to provide emergency care, including abortions,
when medically necessary to continue. The ruling lifts the injunction
on this 40-year-old law called the Emergency Medical Treatment and
Labor Act (EMTALA). Unfortunately, the Supreme Court did not
completely get rid of the politically motivated attacks on EMTALA.
Instead, they created more confusion by sending the case back to
Idaho, where it originated. By sending the case back down to the
state, the Court has set up a possibility where pregnant people facing
medical emergencies might now be at risk of being denied the care they
need, including abortion care. And doctors could be prevented from and
criminalized for performing life-saving procedures and medical duties,
including abortion care. [ [link removed] ]
As you can see, a lot has happened in the past month and we know we have a
long road ahead of us to make sure our reproductive rights are restored
and protected. [2]***Don’t forget to sign our letter calling on the U.S.
Congress to protect all of our reproductive rights! (If we already have
your information you will be automatically signed on to our letter).
The letter we are sending to the U.S. Congress states:
“Dear Member of Congress,
We are at a crisis point and need your support to protect and safeguard
our access to reproductive health care services, that not only include
abortion care but also access to contraception, IVF, abortion medication,
and protects the medical professionals that provide this care.
The vast majority of the American public supports access to abortion: 69%
of Americans believe that abortion should be legal within the first
trimester and 85% of Americans believe that access to abortion is
imperative in dire circumstances. This means that the majority of voters,
even those that lean conservative, believe that abortion should be
available to all who need it.
I urge you to stand against discriminatory laws and bans that erode our
rights and vote in favor of legislation that safeguards our reproductive
rights and makes them more equitable, accessible, and affordable! We ask
that you not only intervene and block threats to crucial reproductive
healthcare but support legislation that will prevent threats like these in
the future.”
We should ALL be free to make our own decisions about our bodies, lives,
and futures. Every pregnancy is different, which is why every person must
be able to make their own decisions about what is best for them. The
consequences of abortion bans and blocking reproductive healthcare access
disproportionately impact Black, brown, and Native women and are
especially harsh for people who live in states with high maternal and
infant mortality rates.
We know you understand the importance of access to timely, affordable,
equitable and comprehensive medical care, including reproductive care. We
are so thankful you are in this fight alongside us. We want you to keep
taking action, speaking out, and spreading the word so all your friends
and family understand what is at risk for reproductive rights. [3]After
you sign our letter, share this email with your friends and family.
Thank you,
Elyssa, Monifa, Jenny, Diarra, Tina, Kristin, and the entire
