Dear John,

This July 4th marks the 248th year of American independence. With the signing of the Declaration of Independence, our Founding Fathers set forth to secure liberty for the citizens of the new nation – liberty which had been restricted under the monarchy of Great Britain.

‌

In declaring independence, not only did the United States begin its first war as a nation, but it also began producing its first veterans as a nation. I think about this often. Since the first day of our independence, brave individuals have put their life on the line – willing to make the ultimate sacrifice – to secure freedom and liberty for their fellow Americans.

This sense of duty to something larger than oneself is why we can celebrate our Independence Day. The selfless sacrifice of so many Americans throughout our history is the lifeblood of the freedoms we enjoy. It is the uniquely American pride and patriotism that has seen our country prosper through the ages. And it is what will ensure we continue to live free and prosperous lives for generations to come.

As an American, I aim to live up to the responsibility of not taking our freedoms for granted.

‌

As a veteran, I hope to continue serving my fellow citizens, to promote liberty for all Americans.

‌

As the executive director of CVA, and on behalf of CVA’s tens of thousands of activists around the country, I wish you, your friends, families, and loved ones a blessed and wonderful Independence Day.
