Dear Reader,

What to make of July 4 in 2024?

The backyard cookouts, fireworks displays, and community festivals evoke some of what has made America great . . . and could again.

Wherever you and I find ourselves in 2024, it is far from what the Founders envisioned for our country in 1776. I’m hopeful we can restore some of that great American spirit, which you and I know will only come through a renewed commitment to the first things.

But how? This is a good moment to remind you of the 2024 FIRST THINGS Intellectual Retreat on “Faith and Civic Responsibility,” which will take place on August 9-10 at the Union League Club of New York.

I’m confident we’ll arrive at an answer over the course of two days with FIRST THINGS editors, instructors from Eastern University’s Templeton Honors College, and your fellow FIRST THINGS readers.

But you’ll have to join us to find out. For more information and to register, visit firstthings.com/retreat ([link removed]) or click on the button below.
