Dear John,
As we celebrate this holiday weekend, we want to recognize the important role local media plays in bringing immigration stories to people like you across the nation.
Whether it’s a Sudanese immigrant studying medicine or a young Honduran asylum seeker enrolled in community college, local media outlets play a key role in highlighting the reality of the U.S. immigrant experience.
At the American Immigration Council, our team of storytellers work with community leaders and editors to help uplift a wider range of voices in the immigration debate and get their perspectives published in local papers.
That includes collaborating with Sophia Sexton, an English professor at a Northern Virginia community college and a contributing columnist to InsideNoVa. With our support, she just won a first-place Virginia Press Association award for column writing, in recognition of the stories she's telling about immigrants in Northern Virginia.
Read some of Dr. Sexton’s work here:
Local news plays a critical role in sharing immigration stories so communities can be better informed and hear from voices that would otherwise be overlooked. The Council will continue working with storytellers at local newspapers across the country so conversations around immigration can be more nuanced and empathetic.
