It wasn’t long ago that the Western neoliberals were gleefully celebrating Joe Biden’s sanctions against Russia. They viewed that initiative as a perfect way to “defend democracy” in Ukraine.
However, we haven’t heard many of those praises lately, and it’s obvious why. The sanctions aren’t working. The Russian ruble took only a few months to return to its pre-war value, and these economic pressures have done nothing to drive Vladimir Putin to end his invasion, therefore fueling our march toward nuclear war.
U.S. media seldom reports on this glaring policy failure, and their silence has misled millions of Americans into believing that their ruling class has even the slightest clue what it’s doing. It doesn’t.
Russian self-made businessmen Andrey Melnichenko had nothing to do with his government’s decision to attack Ukraine, but he’s being punished for it anyway. As one of the sanctions' most direct targets, Melnichenko knows more than nearly anyone about their bizarre nature and ineffectiveness.
