This election is about democracy vs. dictatorship

Indivisibles,

Nearly two and a half centuries ago tomorrow, our nation declared its independence from the crown, and set about to create a system of government without monarchs. The law alone, to paraphrase Thomas Paine, would be king.

That apparently did not sit well with the MAGA justices on the Supreme Court. Perhaps their animosity to democratic government explains why some fly flags in solidarity with insurrectionists trying to overthrow it.

This week, JUST THREE DAYS BEFORE Independence Day, those justices voted to restore the monarchy -- or at the very least monarchy lite -- with their ruling in Trump’s immunity case. Don’t take our word for it:

“The president is now a king,” Justice Sotomayor wrote in her dissent. “Above the law.”

The ruling is incompatible with the continued functioning of our democracy as we know it. This court, as currently constituted, is incompatible with the continued functioning of our democracy as we know it. And if the MAGA justices get their way and Trump wins a second term wielding the absolute immunity the Supreme Court has granted him -- our democratic experiment is in deep, deep trouble.

It’s time to treat the Supreme Court’s corruption and lawless partisan activism like the five alarm fire it is. We need Democrats talking about this, constantly. We need Congress holding hearings to help the public understand the threat. We need to organize to expand the court and to elect members of Congress with the guts to do it. And we need to make sure voters understand the stakes of this election: democracy vs. dictatorship.

There’s no better time than the week of July 4th to come out swinging against judicial tyranny and the specter of authoritarianism in America. Here’s what you can do right now:

Help defeat Trump and elect a Democratic trifecta willing to reform this out-of-control Supreme Court:

  1. If you are in a swing state or district: Talk to your neighbors using our Neighbor2Neighbor tool. Take this message to the streets. Illustrate the chilling reality -- that a rogue Supreme Court is working as an arm of Trump’s MAGA agenda. Talk to voters, explain the stakes, and mobilize them to get involved.
  2. No matter where you live: We’ve just added a phonebank to voters in Pennsylvania. Sign up now to talk to voters in this key swing state that may decide whether or not Trump gets back into the White House, and if MAGA is able to seize control of Congress.

Use this moment to build momentum toward court expansion:

  1. Tell your Democratic senators to co-sponsor the Judiciary Act, which calls for adding four seats to the Supreme Court. Here’s the cold, hard truth: We don’t control the House or have the votes to abolish the filibuster (yet!), so court expansion won’t happen before the election. But we need to use moments like this to grow support for these essential reforms. Right now, senators’ phones should be ringing off the hooks with demands for expansion. Let’s get them on the record supporting solutions that match the scale of the emergency we’re in.
  2. Urge your Democratic representative to co-sponsor the Judiciary Act and sign onto the House Court Reform Task Force to signal their commitment to restoring legitimacy to the Court. Democrats don’t control the House, so once again, we’re playing the long game. And this isn’t just about building support in the House -- this is about getting Democrats to demonstrate to voters that they are willing to fight to protect their rights and save our democracy.

And finally, please consider chipping in to fund this work. There are only 124 days until the election, and Indivisible volunteers are already working to reach voters in battleground states and make this election a referendum on MAGA extremism and the threat of a Trump presidency unrestrained by the rule of law. We have the best volunteers, the most effective tools, and a winning strategy, but the honest-to-God truth is that the number of voters we can reach before Election Day depends on the support we receive now.

Happy Fourth of July, Indivisibles. Let's get out there and save our democracy.

In solidarity,
