** CLC Fair Maps Victory! Court Upholds Michigan's Right to Move Forward with Independent Redistricting Commission ([link removed])
------------------------------------------------------------
In a big win for fair maps, a federal appeals court unanimously upheld a decision to deny an attempt to undermine Michigan’s voter-initiated IRC. CLC is representing Michigan group Voters Not Politicians in the case to protect the IRC, and CLC’s Paul Smith gave oral arguments before the appeals court via telephone on March 17.
On Nov. 6, 2018, 61% (over 2.5 million) of Michigan voters passed Proposal 2, amending the Michigan Constitution to establish an Independent Redistricting Commission. The IRC is intended to put the power of redistricting in the hands of citizens, not politicians. Now, Michiganders can proceed with recruiting citizens to serve on the IRC with the confidence that two courts have given the IRC the green light.
