LEWISTON - The Maine Department of Transportation will be replacing the wearing surface of the bridge that carries Lincoln Street over part of the Androscoggin River between Locust Street and South Avenue in Lewiston. This work will require the bridge to be fully closed to traffic from Wednesday, July 10th through Friday, July 12th. On Monday, June 25th, a crew from the city noticed some buckling on the bridge surface. That crew closed the bridge to traffic and contacted MaineDOT. MaineDOT responded to inspect the bridge. Part of the bridge's concrete surface has separated from the concrete bridge deck due to the expansion of trapped moisture between the layers. Crews patched the pavement as a short-term solution to reopen the road to traffic. MaineDOT has now contracted Shaw Brothers Construction of Gorham to replace the entire bridge wearing surface. This work will also involve the application of a membrane between the concrete layers to prevent future problems caused by moisture and temperature fluctuations. This work is expected to cost approximately $66,000.
