Americans are buying guns in record numbers. In fact, the FBI processed over 3.7 million firearm background checks in March alone, the highest number we've seen in more than 20 years.

Unfortunately, we are seeing this same trend right here in Pennsylvania with a 14 percent increase in completed checks. We don't know a lot about what life in America will look like after COVID-19 -- but we do know there will be a lot more guns in our communities.

We also know that more guns don't make us safer, and all the data we have shows that the complete opposite is actually true. But that hasn't stopped the gun lobby from fear-mongering and using this pandemic as a catalyst to drive up gun sales and line their pockets.

We live in a country where Trump, McConnell, and their rubber-stamp allies have prioritized getting Americans access to guns over their safety. That's just plain wrong, and we need to tell Trump to put our health and safety before the gun lobby's greed:

And let's be clear: many aspects of American life have stopped -- but gun violence has not. As more and more survivors of domestic violence are trapped at home with their abusers, the more we should be alarmed by drive-through and parking lot firearm sales and the gun lobby's baseless fear-mongering.

Calls to domestic violence hotlines are already up dramatically, and evidence shows that a gun in the house makes you more likely to be hurt or killed by one. There are entirely too many lives at stake to turn a blind eye to the gun lobby capitalizing on fear and uncertainty to make our homes and our communities less safe.
