FAQ: Why can’t I use marijuana before surgery?
While we’re still learning about the effects of how these two interact, it’s best to consult with your anesthesiologist and abstain from use before surgery.
Here’s what we do know about using marijuana before surgery:
You may need more anesthesia to fall and stay asleep. A study found that people who used marijuana in any form before surgery needed 50% more anesthesia during their procedure.
You may experience more pain. The ASA found that patients who use marijuana before surgery may experience more pain while in recovery than others.
Marijuana use before surgery can increase the risk of complications. It can cause low blood pressure and an increased heart rate, which is dangerous during surgery.
Take a few minutes out of your day for your mental health with this month’s Meditation on developing self-love and kindness. Being kind to ourselves allows us to have compassion for others.
This Meditation is lead by Holly O’Dea, one of our Online Support Community facilitators and Mayo Clinic Certified Wellness Coach.
