Your bite-size run-down of yesterday's key events

Damning delays

Delays to postal votes being delivered are being urgently investigated amid concerns that some people could be left disenfranchised at the General Election, with complaints made across more than  90 constituencies. If you have forgotten to post your postal vote or it hasn’t arrived in time, head to this useful Twitter/X thread <[link removed]> from the Electoral Commission to find out what you can do.

Friday night dinner

After Keir Starmer voiced his preference not to work past 6pm on Fridays in order to spend “protected time” with his family, as he has done for years, the Conservative Party - a self-described party of family values - launched into full-frontal attack mode, accusing the Labour leader of being lazy and uncommitted. This ultimately backfired with many supporting Starmer’s supposition that he will be a better leader for a bit of work-life balance. In the past, Starmer has described his regular Friday night sabbath dinners with his wife’s Jewish family as “a rock in the week.”

Crass comments

Another day, another scandal for Reform UK Party Ltd. This time, foul-mouthed comments were uncovered from Robert Smith, containing abuse against women including former Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, author J.K. Rowling and European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde. Just hours later, the party’s candidate in West Ham and Beckton, announced she was suspending her campaign and defecting to the Conservatives, saying, “the vast majority of [Reform] candidates are indeed racist, misogynistic, and bigoted”.

But there's more

Unfortunately Reform wasn't the only party to have candidates picked up for sharing horrible comments, with a recording leaked from Jacob Rees-Mogg going full Trump and saying he wants to “build a wall in the English Channel.”

Salient reminder

I only share the above two reports to remind readers of the importance of tactical voting to remove toxic populist politicians from Parliament. In Rees Mogg’s seat, North East Somerset and Hanham <[link removed]>, we are recommending a vote for the Labour candidate, while in Robert Smith’s seat, Orkney & Shetland <[link removed]>, we are advising constituents to vote with their hearts. To see our recommendation in your seat, head to GetVoting.org <[link removed]> now.
