This Supreme Court will go down as one of the worst in our nation’s history. With a dark cloud of corruption and conflict hanging over Justices Thomas and Alito, this court has gone out of its way to overturn long standing precedents and reorder American society to advance a radical conservative agenda.
As if overturning
Roe v. Wade wasn’t enough, they reinterpreted the First Amendment as a free pass for bigots to discriminate against the LGBTQ community in the name of religion; functionally re-legalized machine guns; and revoked the longstanding legal deference that allows federal agencies to promulgate regulations to protect our health, safety and environment.
But today they went fully rogue by granting Donald Trump and all future Presidents sweeping “absolute immunity” for anything involving the exercise of their official powers. This reckless 6-3 ruling completely destroys the notion that no one is above the law, and paves the way for an aspiring dictator like Trump to become a real one.
Because of this terrible ruling, if Trump wins the election he now has everything he needs – not only to bypass Congress, ignore the law, and enrich himself and his family; but to carry out the worst abuses of power imaginable, including jailing or killing political rivals, deploying the military for political purposes, and even ordering a coup that terminates our democracy.
This terrible court decision makes one thing crystal clear: we are no longer voting to choose a President this year. We’re truly voting on whether to continue our 237-year journey as a democratic republic, or end it.
The prospect of a President Trump wielding unchecked power should alarm everyone. We know if Trump and his MAGA cronies get back into the White House, they will immediately carry out their Project 2025 “war plan,” and this Supreme Court just gave them a powerful new tool for doing it.
Our democracy and fundamental rights have never been in more grave danger. This election, and our collective patriotic commitment to winning it, is one of the critical moments in our nation’s history.
This moment demands action, John. We can stop Trump and his loyalists from inflicting further irreparable damage, but only if we stand together now.
