Synthesis is a 2-minute read to give you the quick hits of our recent work, to amplify our partners, and to share important environmental stories.

Thanks to you, Orca Action Month was a huge success! WCA and other organizations in partnership with the Orca Salmon Alliance hosted numerous family-friendly events, informational webinars, and mobilized action takers to urge Gov. Jay Inslee and the state Department of Ecology to ban chemicals toxic to orca. We also concluded the month with an energizing rally in downtown Seattle!

During Pride Month, WCA collaborated with QPOC Hikers and Patagonia in hosting community events to promote inclusivity outdoors and providing a space for queer environmentalists and allies to connect. Our team led a sold-out beach clean up event at Elliot Bay Park and gathered pledges to vote in the community. Check out King 5's coverage of the event here [[link removed]], featuring WCA organizer Grace in an orca costume!

The 2024 summer issue of our bi-annual magazine, Convene, lands in mailboxes soon! This issue features stories about action in all its forms, a feature on WCA's pick for Commissioner of Public Lands, Dave Upthegrove, and more. By donating $25 right now, you too can receive Convene right to your mailbox. [[link removed]]

Washington voters will receive primary ballots in mid-July. Your vote in the primary election will determine whether environmental champions, like Bob Ferguson, Dave Upthegrove, and more, advance to the general election. We must elect leaders who are fierce advocates for Washington's environment and people. Is your voter registration up to date? Doublecheck at voter.votewa.gov.

Every two years, WCA releases our Legislative Scorecard, evaluating how legislators did during the legislative session. Did your lawmakers vote for environmental justice, support climate action, advocate for forests, and protect people, fish, and orcas from toxic harm? Find out in our latest 2024 Environmental Legislative Scorecard [[link removed]]!

WCA elects environmental champions across the state. For every election, we endorse candidates who we expect to be environmental champions as well as ballot measures that will protect people and nature as one, like Bob Ferguson, Dave Upthegrove and more. Initiative 2117 would repeal funding that supports public transit and other critical climate programs that help everyday Washingtonians. We must come together to defeat this dangerous initiative. We cannot let one out-of-touch right wing multi-millionaire negatively impact the lives of millions. Urge your friends and family to join in the historic effort and vote NO on ballot initiative 2117 this November. [[link removed]]

For decades, the US Army Corp of Engineers used Bradford Island as a toxic dumping ground. Because of this, resident fish in that area have the highest cancer-causing PCB contamination levels, harming the communities that rely on this resource. Tell federal agencies you support the immediate and thorough cleanup of Bradford Island Superfund Site! [[link removed]]

AMBASSADOR CORNER: Mickey Rogers (she/her)

We periodically share about members of WCA's Ambassador program, which is a group of passionate activists of advancing environmental, social and political progress in Washington state.

Mickey Rogers (she/her/hers) is a WCA Ambassador born and raised in Ohio and now lives in Richland, Washington. She is a researcher, science communicator, and ocean-climate activist. Mickey earned a PhD in Chemistry from The Ohio State University then moved to Richland to pursue a science career researching a very unique and impactful field of study she is deeply passionate about: airborne algae.

Mickey's love for science policy and communication led her to join Citizens' Climate Lobby Tri-Cities, American Chemical Society Richland Section, and WCA. She also co-founded Sustainable Ocean Alliance Pacific Northwest and advocates for deep sea protections.

"I proudly claim to be an ocean-first climate activist. As a scientist studying the ocean and algae, I recognize the ocean is our largest carbon sink and greatest climate champion. Protecting the ocean protects our climate and all beings. I see myself as a science translator, speaking for the ocean and our climate, by liaising between the researchers and our policymakers."

RACIAL JUSTICE GLOSSARY

Tribal Sovereignty

Tribal Sovereignty refers to the inherent right and authority to self govern. It is important to understand that tribal sovereignty is not created by the U.S. government. Treaties, executive orders, and laws have confirmed fundamental contracts between Tribes and the United States despite repeated and ongoing attempts to undermine that sovereignty. Not every ribes’ sovereignty has been recognized by the U.S. government.
