Over the last two weeks, the far-right U.S. Supreme Court has issued several rulings that threaten our communities and democracy, John.
Here’s a round-up of recent SCOTUS decisions and what they mean:
- Presidential immunity: Justices appointed by former president and insurrectionist Donald Trump ruled that presidents like him have “absolute immunity” from any crimes committed as “official acts,” giving presidents a dangerous new level of king-like power.
- Homelessness: This cruel Court ruled that cities can criminalize unhoused people sleeping outside with fines and even jail time, even if shelter is not available.
- Chevron doctrine: The same Justices bribed with expensive vacations, RVs, and yacht trips by corporations just rolled back 40 years of legal precedent by weakening federal agencies’ (like the Environmental Protection Agency and Food and Drug Administration) ability to enforce regulations, putting more trust and power in the hands of profit-driven corporations over science-backed experts.
- Emergency abortion: The Court ruled that states like Idaho with near-total abortion bans must provide abortion procedures in emergency cases — for now. Ultimately, they punted this back to the lower courts, leaving the door open for emergency abortions to one day be banned.
To summarize, the majority of right-wing justices say that being unhoused is a punishable crime, corporations don’t have to follow health and safety rules set by experts, emergency abortion is safe for now but at risk, and a president can assassinate a political rival or lead a violent coup and get away with it. Got it.
We need Democratic Party leadership to take URGENT action to expand the Court and impeach corrupt Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito. So far, some of the only Democrats calling for this are Justice Democrats incumbents like Ilhan Omar and Cori Bush, who both face GOP-funded opponents in next month’s primary elections.
Right now, it’s all hands on deck for the future of the Democratic Party and our democracy as we know it. Can you please rush a grassroots contribution of $5 to help re-elect our progressive champions and keep up the fight?

These SCOTUS decisions are frightening, but now is not a time to give in to fear and cynicism. We must organize and come together to fight for the leaders and country we deserve before it’s too late.
In solidarity,
Justice Democrats
