Let's do something else

The recent presidential debate between President Biden and former President Trump has sparked intense national discussion about the state of? the upcoming election and the fitness of either of these candidates. This event should serve as an inflection point, highlighting long-standing issues within the two-party system. Are these really our only two choices, and if so, why?

The current political landscape is a result of individual office holders and the major parties prioritizing their own power over the best governance or the will of the people. While they may believe their actions serve a greater good, this approach often leads to compromising principles and resisting progress that threatens their control. It is inherently anti-compromise and it has deteriorated now to the point of failure. The parties have effectively created a narrative of binary choice, framing the opposition as an existential threat, and anyone outside the major parties as naive or untruthful to discourage voters from considering alternatives.

This particular situation didn't arise overnight but is the result of missed opportunities and systemic inertia. The Republican primary, while initially competitive, ultimately galvanized around Trump, partially in response to the steady stream of news coverage of his on-going legal trouble. On the Democratic side, Biden's team strategically maneuvered to secure his renomination, while challengers like Dean Phillips, Marianne Williamson, and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. were dismissed almost entirely and thus failed to gain significant traction. In a larger sense, these failures are the nearly inevitable result of the system as it is now and can only be understood by asking why we do things the way we do and what stops us from changing.

The ongoing dominance of the two-party system reflects a broader failure to build viable alternatives. Organizations like the Forward Party are working to change this status quo. There are no less than 6 well supported presidential candidates in this race. There are election reform and anti polarization advocacy groups in almost every state. The interest in the Libertarian Party, the Green Party, re-emergence of the Reform Party, and the efforts by other minor parties across the country show that there is real demand for this change. Pair that with a decentralized independent media, and we have the potential for a political revolution if only our citizens can get over their divisions to realize it.

We can have a system that considers more than 2 options, that allows politicians to represent their constituents without toeing party lines. We can hear long form conversations with all candidates where they lay out detailed arguments instead of 2 minute sound bites. We can have elections where we have trouble choosing between all the great candidates. We can have unconventional candidates running for offices at all levels of government so we get the wisdom of all parts of American life into our government.

We can use this debate and its aftermath can serve as an inflection point making it clear that things can not go on the way they are. If your mindset today is disbelief that we are doing this, we humbly suggest that we can do something else.

Opportunity to help ends this month:

Collect Signatures for our candidates

What else can you do, you ask? How about get a couple great candidates from an exciting new party on the ballot? Just a few hours can make all the difference.

At the end of this month, we're turning in the signatures we all have gathered. If it's enough, we'll have candidates on the ballot this November and can be a recognized minor party by the end of the year. This is the number one best way you can help right now to establish something new. People desperately want to sign this petition when given the opportunity. Someone just has to ask them.
