WaPo: Supreme Court’s Trump immunity ruling poses risk for democracy, experts say [[link removed]]
While the Supreme Court tried to emphasize the ideal that "no one in America is above the law", not even the president, John -- their actions say otherwise , giving a free pass for "official acts" while not explaining in any way what constitutes an "official act".
We don't want future presidents to be able to ignore or disobey our laws and avoid prosecution. Being blunt, we don't want any other presidents to be able to encourage violent protests like we saw on January 6th and get away with egging on supporters who assault police officers and desecrate our Capitol Building by breaking in while searching for elected officials they are unhappy with for certifying election results.
Think this sounds hyperbolic? Richard Nixon's lawyer, John Dean, says a ruling like this from the Supreme Court back in the 1970's would've kept Nixon in office and provided him an excuse for Watergate.
David Becker, the executive director of the Center for Election Innovation and Research, summed things up nicely: “ If a future president sitting in the Oval Office were to want to commit crimes, up to and including subverting an election or remaining in power against the will of the American people, this opinion, in my mind, could provide a road map for that .”
This is just another example of how our democracy is on the line in this election and how opponents of voting rights are on the march. We need your help to fight back.
