Have you been following the rulings come out of the Supreme Court, John?
If you have, you’ll know:
The conservative and corrupt Supreme Court, ruled by a far-right majority, is doing everything it can to erode our rights.
Add your name to our petition to call on Congress to expand the court. As is, the conservative Supreme Court will only continue to chip away at our rights and democracy. One of the most effective ways we can fight back is by expanding the court.
We’ll break it down for you. The Supreme Court has made decisions in three cases that directly threaten our communities and erode our rights.
In
Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo SCOTUS overturned
Chevron U.S.A., Inc. v. Natural Resources Defense Council, Inc. — a legal precedent from 1986. This is going to result in a HUGE curtailing of the power of federal agencies to interpret the laws they regulate in healthcare, the environment, and more. The ambiguity that
Loper creates will only allow Black rights to be eroded even further.
Black communities are on the frontlines when natural disasters caused by climate change occur. There’s already a ton of research that shows that Black folks already experience medical racism — from being underinsured to having our pain undertreated to other racial disparities in the medical field.
Loper only serves to worsen the effects of both,
and more.
Fischer v. United States saw the Supreme Court protect January 6th insurrectionists. There was nothing peaceful about the January 6th attempted coup, but the people who participated in them are being protected by the highest court in the land.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court declined to hear the critical
McKesson v. Doe court case, which
could’ve strengthened the First Amendment to protect protest organizers from being held liable for illegal actions committed by others present that organizers did not direct or intend.
It’s clear that there’s a different standard of protection for demonstrators who are protesting in the name of Black lives and liberation, against genocide, and for our communities, compared to the white supremacists who attempted a coup on January 6th, 2021.
The court’s dismissal of
Idaho v. United States forces pregnant patients and those seeking critical reproductive care to stay in the chaos and confusion of a post-
Roe v. Wade overturned world. Pushing the decision of this case to lower courts instead of taking this opportunity to restore abortion rights is cowardly.
Black communities bear the brunt of the
Roe v. Wade decision. Black women and birthing people face higher rates of maternal mortality, and far too many Black communities across the country are severely lacking in the reproductive education, resources, and access that they need and deserve.
The Supreme Court’s decisions show that they directly oppose democracy. SCOTUS’ job is to defend the people, but instead, their rulings are undoing the decades of progress and advancements that we’ve made.
SCOTUS is becoming a political body that furthers the far-right agenda. The Supreme Court is expanding the right for white supremacists to have free reign at the expense of marginalized Black and brown communities.
Decisions of the Supreme Court directly impact Black communities the hardest
— and it's time that the court expands to serve its democratic obligation to the people.
The only way that SCOTUS can be stopped is if we expand the court. If we continue to put our faith in the system as is the conservative majority will continue to drag us backwards.
Add your name to our petition now to call on Congress to act and expand the court. We can’t let the Supreme Court get away with devastating harm to our rights.
In solidarity,
Black Lives Matter
