“In every use of official power, the President is now a king above the law.” That’s how Supreme Court Justice Sotomayor described the Court’s decision in Trump v. US in her dissent yesterday.

I’m not going to sugarcoat this: yesterday's ruling erodes our democracy. Rather than confirming that Trump is not immune from crimes he committed in office, the Court invented a concept of presidential immunity and sent the case back to the U.S. District Court for further review.

The extremist Supreme Court is unaccountable and out of touch. That’s why I’ve introduced legislation to:

* Set 18-year term limits for Supreme Court justices.
* Implement a judicial code of ethics for federal judges and Supreme Court justices.

Both Justices Thomas and Alito had significant conflicts of interest in this case. Thomas accepted numerous gifts from wealthy individuals with business before the Court, and his wife was directly involved in the Stop the Steal movement that tried to overturn the 2020 election.

Justice Alito, meanwhile, flew a symbol of the Stop the Steal movement outside his home following the attack on the Capitol. Yet both justices still decided a case about the January 6th insurrection.
You don’t need a law degree to know these should have been grounds for recusal.
