Dear John,

It is mid-April already and temperatures are slowly rising here in Phoenix. For weeks we have been enjoying crisp mornings, lulling afternoon breezes, and cool desert evenings. I fear that is about to change very soon. Walks in the neighborhood and hikes on less-traveled trails have been our go-to mental health breaks throughout these weeks of quarantine. Seeing wildflowers along the path in bursts of yellow, purple, and white, and the expanse of green along the hillside, all gifted to us from the ample rain we had through the winter. It has been a feast for the eyes and the soul. Those glimpses of vibrant life have served as offerings of hope, of anticipating better days to come, and we accept them eagerly.

There is hope elsewhere, also. We hear of daily acts of kindness, generosity, and grace. Meals being made and delivered to healthcare workers; groceries delivered for the elderly; frontline essential workers cheering in support of fellow frontline essential workers; masks made on home sewing machines sold to folks in the community and funds raised going to local non-profits organizations; people sharing words of gratitude to grocery clerks, food delivery folks, and sanitation workers; nurses staying well beyond their shifts to hold the hand of a patient who is dying alone. In each of these acts there is hope and an unshakeable faith in humanity.

As the weeks go along, we are working hard to stay connected with you all. We pray you and your families are doing well. We miss the daily interactions with folks all around our communities: conversations during a meet-n-greet, stories shared at a house party, discussions about policies at a small business owners' breakfast; in-person updates from friends running for county and legislative offices; working alongside our amazing volunteers and supporters. You are all the fuel of this campaign, the energy that keeps us fierce and focused. More than ever before, we're grateful we have the benefit of technology to help us in this time of social distancing. ZOOM meetings, Facebook live Town Halls, social media posts, emails, virtual gatherings. These are all filling the void for now.

Nevertheless, everyone is going through a sense of loss, of things big or small, and is grieving in some way or another. There is isolation, physical pain, emotional suffering, loss of life, dire economic hardship. There is also a loss of special celebrations, life's milestones, singular experiences, and much-anticipated adventures. For all of these, we honor the sense of loss. Please take the time to acknowledge what you are feeling, allow yourself the space and time to grieve, and respect others' need to do the same. We all have an innate need to process this state of existence we are in, thoroughly put it in the perspective of what was and what might be. Do not deny yourself the right to recognize loss in any and all of its forms, not as an exercise of self-pity but as an act of gentleness with your soul. Then, when you're ready, let a seed of hope take root and grow.

There is evidence all of our sacrifices are working, that all of the social distancing guidelines and shelter-in-place mandates are flattening the curve (granted, to various degrees) and affecting our ability to mitigate spread. Every single action each person has taken to keep themselves, their families, and their communities safe is an action of public service. To all those who are doing their part, despite the adversity of your situation, thank you! And to those who are out there, on the frontline, despite the risk to you and your families, we offer our deepest gratitude for your courage and selflessness.

We remain focused on getting information out to our communities about how to stay safe and healthy, where to go for assistance, how to access resources, and what folks may be able to do to help their neighbors and those in need. We will continue to share facts, data, medically accurate information, as well as advocate for definitive guidance on actions Congress should be taking to address the dire need for universal healthcare coverage, the immense burden on our healthcare system, the lack of protections for frontline workers, the impact on our small businesses and hourly wage workers, the obvious fragility and longstanding inequities in our nation's health and economic security.

We will continue to amplify your voices as you share your experiences with us. We will continue to identify the needs throughout our communities. Please reach out with questions or for additional information by emailing [email protected]. Or just send us a note to say hello ☺ Regardless, please know we are here to help in any way we can.

Take very good care, and may you see a little hope outside your window today.

With our warmest regards,

The Tipirneni Family & Team Hiral
