New report presents statistics on sexual victimization in adult correctional facilities

BJS has released Sexual Victimization Reported by Adult Correctional Authorities, 2019–2020 – Statistical Tables. This report provides counts and rates of allegations of inmate-on-inmate and staff-on-inmate sexual victimization across all types of adult correctional facilities. In contrast to prior reports, allegations and substantiated incidents of inmate-on-inmate sexual harassment are presented together with data for other types of sexual victimization. This reporting change makes it easier to present trends across these victimization types and better aligns with future data collections.

Findings in this report are based on the Survey of Sexual Victimization (SSV), which BJS has conducted annually since 2004. The SSV is among the data collections that BJS conducts to meet the requirements of the Prison Rape Elimination Act of 2003 (PREA; P.L. 108–79).
