A New Look for Global Labor Justice

Thank you to those who joined us for the 2024 Global Labor Rights Defenders Celebration on International Workers’ Day and our announcement that we are now known as Global Labor Justice. We’re building on all of our organizational history to deliver bold new strategies that help workers win across the challenges inherent in global value chains and across labor migration corridors and create a more just global economy.

Migrant fishers in Taiwan’s fleet are escalating their demands for Wi-Fi. FOSPI fishers traveled to seafood industry expos in Barcelona and Boston to demand that brands respect fishers’ rights in their supply chains. Migrant fishers and allies are stepping up their pressure on the Taiwanese government to include fishers’ labor rights in a major migration MOU with Indonesia and a key trade deal with the U.S.

Cotton Campaign: Fighting Forced Labor in Turkmenistan

In the second part of the 2023 cotton harvest, the Turkmen government no longer mobilized or extorted teachers and doctors. This comes after a decade of independent monitoring and reporting, advocacy, and accountability actions by the Cotton Campaign coalition. It’s a step forward, but still a long way from the elimination of forced labor in the harvest, empowerment of workers and farmers, and protection of freedoms of association and expression.

Women Workers Celebrate 5th Anniversary of ILO Convention to Address Violence and Harassment

June 19, 2024, marked the fifth anniversary of the adoption of ILO Convention (C190), the first international treaty to address violence and harassment in the world of work. GLJ hosted an event with women workers and allies to highlight the importance of bridging labor and women’s rights movements to address gender-based violence and harassment (GBVH) and explore links between care, labor, and GBVH.

Garment Workers Building Solidarity

Our global solidarity movement with garment workers who make apparel for Nike is growing. Global Labor JusticeAsia Floor Wage Alliance, and allies are building connections between workers and unions across Asia and bringing the demands for fair pay and rights at work to Nike’s doorstep in the U.S. On July 16, join women in the U.S. labor movement to stand in solidarity garment workers fighting for justice in Nike’s supply chain.

Workers at Onomo Hotel in Conakry, Guinea, Win Union!

Workers won their union election on January 4, and now have four delegates representing them in negotiations. On June 3, the union submitted a majority photo petition demanding the reinstatement of their coworkers who were subcontracted last year in retaliation for exercising their rights to freedom of association. The fight goes on!

Fighting for Migrant Workers' Rights!

We’ve launched the first-ever global labor coalition to demand fundamental labor and human rights for the millions of migrant workers in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. Led by Global Labor Justice, Anti-Slavery International, Equidem, International Domestic Workers Federation, and Solidarity Center, the Coalition on Labor Justice for Migrants in the Gulf is calling for governments and employers to respect the rights of migrant workers throughout their recruitment, migration, employment, and return home.
