Supreme Court Decision Gives Presidential Immunity on “Core” Official Acts

Elite media and Democrats react in hysteria. Ignore them. Wall Street Journal: The 6-3 Court majority rightly focuses on the institution of the Presidency, and the ability of all Presidents—not merely the last one—to act in the national interest free from prosecution for official acts. The opinion by Chief Justice John Roberts in Trump v. U.S. is a landmark on executive power…. The Chief calls out the dissents for “fear mongering on the basis of extreme hypotheticals.” And he says they “overlook the more likely prospect of an Executive Branch that cannibalizes itself, with each successive President free to prosecute his predecessors, yet unable to boldly and fearlessly carry out his duties for fear that he may be next” (Wall Street Journal). Regarding the case against Trump: The case now returns to the lower courts for them to determine whether the conduct at the center of the charges against Trump was official or unofficial – an inquiry that, even if it leads to the conclusion that the charges can proceed, will almost certainly further delay any trial in the case, which had originally been scheduled to begin on March 4, 2024 but is currently on hold (SCOTUSblog).

Biden Addresses Nation in Wake of Supreme Court Decision: “Any president including Donald Trump will now be free to ignore the law”
Biden: “I know I will respect the limits of the presidential powers as I have for three-and-a-half years. But any president including Donald Trump will now be free to ignore the law” (YouTube). CNN: The notably political speech comes at a critical moment for Biden’s campaign as he tries to beat back persistent concerns about his age exacerbated by his performance in last week’s presidential debate. His unsteady performance wreaked anxiety among some of his top donors and raised uncomfortable questions for Democrats about whether he should remain on their ticket, much less serve another four years in the White House. During Monday’s speech, Biden appeared alert, reading energetically from a teleprompter in the Cross Hall of the White House. But he did not take questions, immediately retreating after his five-minute, scripted statement (CNN).

Post-Debate Polling Has Trump Up in New Hampshire; Now a “Competitive State”
WMUR: A new poll shows President Joe Biden trailing former President Donald Trump among New Hampshire registered voters by two points. The Saint Anselm College Survey Center polled more than 1,700 registered voters in the first two days after the recent presidential debate. In the poll, 44% said they support Trump, compared to 42% who said Biden was their choice. Another 4% said they planned to vote for independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr…. “I think it’s now conclusive that New Hampshire is really a competitive state in the presidential election,” said Neil Levesque, of the New Hampshire Institute of Politics (WMUR). Molly Ball: The fallout from last week’s presidential debate has thrust the Democratic Party into a spiraling crisis. Yet many in the party view the current reckoning as sadly inevitable—the product of years of defensive refusal by President Biden and his protective inner circle to acknowledge the decline in his public presentation that has long been obvious to voters (WSJ).

Democratic National Committee May Nominate Biden Virtually in July
To minimize further embarrassment, humiliation and tension at the convention. Spencer Brown: The Democratic National Committee … is reportedly making moves to nominate President Biden before August’s convention to ensure he appears on Ohio’s ballot, squash talk of Biden not being the nominee by the time Election Day rolls around in November, and prevent pro-Hamas protestors from upending an in-person roll call (Townhall). Bloomberg: A potential date for Biden’s nomination is July 21, when the Democratic convention’s credentials committee meets virtually, according to people familiar with the matter who spoke on condition of anonymity. The panel is meeting to finalize procedures before the party’s convention in Chicago starts on Aug. 19 (Bloomberg).

Should He Stay or Should He Go Now? Democrats Are Scared Either Way
Christian Science Monitor: Gary Roush is the kind of progressive who spends his retirement protesting former President Donald Trump. On Friday morning, the former technical writer rode the Metro from his home in College Park, Maryland, to the U.S. Supreme Court carrying a poster featuring Mr. Trump’s mug shot and the slogan, “Plotting to overturn an election is not an ‘official act,’ it’s a crime!” Mr. Roush says he “could not be more opposed to having Trump anywhere near the White House again.” That’s exactly why he’s so unhappy with President Joe Biden…. “Biden completely failed his efforts to show the nation that he isn’t a bumbling old man,” he says (CSM). Politico turns to 12 experts on whether Biden should stay or go. Jeff Greenfield: My 4-Step Plan for Democrats: 1. Build a time-machine. 2. Go back to 2015; convince President Barack Obama that Hillary Clinton is a deeply flawed candidate; have him back Vice President Joe Biden instead…. (Politico).

Republicans Now Targeting Democrat Nominees Who Have Defended Biden’s Energy Level and Keen Cognitive Faculties
Washington Examiner: Republicans in both chambers are targeting Democrats who have previously downplayed concerns about President Joe Biden’s fitness for office in an effort to help the GOP pick up seats this fall. The National Republican Campaign Committee released a memo that outlined a new strategy to blast House Democrats’ “blind allegiance” to Biden as a weapon in an effort to “expand the map and grow the House majority.” The memo comes days after Biden’s widely criticized performance in the first presidential debate. “House Democrats have stood by and enabled this crisis due to their own fecklessness and allegiance to their party over the people of this country,” said Jack Pandol, the NRCC’s communications director, in the memo (Washington Examiner). Politico: In Pennsylvania, Republican DAVID McCORMICK went live with a new ad that ping-ponged from incumbent Sen. BOB CASEY expressing confidence in Biden’s leadership with the president’s halting debate performance. “Casey knew about Biden’s condition,” the words on the screen read (Politico).

After SCOTUS Decision, Trump Files Motion to Set Aside Verdict in New York Case
New York Times: Donald J. Trump began an effort on Monday to throw out his recent criminal conviction in Manhattan and postpone his upcoming sentencing, citing a new Supreme Court ruling that granted him broad immunity from prosecution for official actions he took as president, according to a person with knowledge of the matter. In a letter to the judge overseeing the case, Mr. Trump’s lawyers sought permission to file a motion to set aside the verdict, doing so just hours after the Supreme Court issued its landmark ruling involving one of Mr. Trump’s other criminal cases. The letter will not be public until Tuesday at the earliest, after which prosecutors will have a chance to respond (New York Times).

Biden Administration Now Flying in Migrants Previously Deported
Free Beacon:  The Biden administration is flying previously deported Cameroonians whose asylum claims were determined to be invalid back into the United States, according to interviews with Immigration and Customs Enforcement staff and internal agency memos reviewed by the Washington Free Beacon. The program, which has not been announced to the public, appears to be a response to a February 2022 Human Rights Watch report about dozens of Cameroonians deported between 2019 and 2021 and then allegedly mistreated by their government. An estimated 80 to 90 Cameroonians were deported during that period of time. But now some are arriving back in the United States under a program with little precedent, both current and former ICE officials say. All of the individuals deported under the previous administration were found not to have valid asylum claims in the United States (Free Beacon). Jazz Shaw: It’s almost as if the Biden administration is just trying to tick everyone off at this point and is simply daring us not to vote for him. We already know that Joe Biden’s recent executive actions regarding the border did nothing and we continue to be overrun by illegal migrants. We also know that he’s been allowing migrants to use a phone app to obtain free flights into the country. But that apparently wasn’t enough for Uncle Joe (Hot Air).

In 8-1 Decision, Texas Supreme Court Upholds Law Prohibiting “Gender Transition” for Minors
LifeSite: The Texas Supreme Court upheld a 2023 law making it illegal to subject minors to puberty blockers, transgender hormone interventions, and “gender transition” surgeries. In its 8 to 1 ruling, the court found that “the Legislature had a rational basis for concluding that the risk of providing (transgender interventions) to children solely for the purpose of physically transitioning from their sex at birth was not outweighed by the benefits….” “This is a significant victory for Texas children, protecting them from puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones and the cutting off of healthy body parts, all of which are irreversible,” said Texas Values (TV) in a statement following the court’s decision (LifeSite).
