248 years ago this week, our nation was founded by a group of patriots seeking to free themselves from tyranny and a monarchy that held itself above the law. No one should be above the law in this country — but today, a Supreme Court packed with Donald Trump’s hand-picked justices deeply undermined that fundamental tenet of our democracy. For years, our nation has operated under the idea that no matter what you look like, where you come from, or who you pray to, you are equal under the eyes of the law. But today, the Supreme Court of the United States broke away from that stabilizing idea — an idea that has held our nation together for nearly two and a half centuries. John, a ruling that states there is one person who is above the law is not one of the core principles upon which our nation was founded. Our nation was founded upon the idea that all men are created equal — including Presidents. The Supreme Court has ushered our nation into a dangerous new era — not just because of Donald Trump’s corruption — but because we no longer have that same underpinning of equality that our founding fathers worked so hard to develop right here in Pennsylvania. As our country enters an unprecedented moment, we must remain committed to the guiding principles that have made this country a beacon of liberty — and we must continue the work of generations of Americans who came before us as we fight to protect our democracy and perfect our union.
